The Office of the City Attorney is seeking an experienced transactional attorney in the Real Property & Environment Division of the Municipal Law Branch.
The Real Property & Environment Division provides legal advice and services to the Mayor and the City Council as well as various City departments on issues relating to the City's ownership, acquisition, disposal and use of land, and on environmental matters, including the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and hazardous waste matters. These services include drafting leases, contracts, ordinances and other documents, and litigating direct and inverse condemnation actions, unlawful detainer actions, hazardous material claims within the Division's areas of practice.
The primary responsibilities of the selected attorney will be to represent and advise various City Offices and departments on a wide range of transactional projects, including those related to the acquisition, development, construction, financing, leasing and disposition of City property.
Education, training, experience:
Three (3) years of civil litigation practice in California and Federal Courts. The applicant should have transactional law and municipal law experience, and knowledge about how to obtain approval of documents, reports and ordinances from City Council and City Commissions. Licensed to practice law in all courts in the State of California and the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
The following qualifications are desirable:
• Demonstrated research and writing skills in complex areas of law;
• Ability to deal effectively with public officials, departmental personnel and members of the public;
• Experience with municipal law, including the Ralph M. Brown Act and Public Records Act;
• Ability to work efficiently and make decisions practically and independently;
• Strong oral communication skills; and
• Appellate experience.
Applicants are required to submit two writing samples.
Appointment to this exempt position (non Civil-Service) will be subject to a two (2) year probationary period as required by Section 1050 of the City Charter. Successful completion of the two (2) year probationary period will result in tenure with the office.
