Overview
Assistant General Counsel – Labor & Employment
100% Onsite - Los Angeles, CA
Purpose Statement/Position Summary: The Assistant General Counsel serves within the Office of the General Counsel of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and provides legal support to CHLA, in order to advance its mission with an overall objective of minimizing organizational liability. The Office of the General Counsel of CHLA is seeking a sharp, self-motivated attorney with at least 10+ years of labor and employment experience. This role will require a deep understanding of employment and labor laws, strong analytical and interpersonal skills, and the ability to navigate complex legal matters within a fast-paced and innovative environment. Critical to this role is the ability to advise stakeholders on their options, provide guidance, and strategize methods to minimize organizational legal risk and ensure compliance with laws and regulations. This role reports directly to the General Counsel.
Requirements
Ideal candidates will possess or demonstrate the following:
Track record of partnering effectively with cross-functional teams and providing proactive, solution-oriented advice to stakeholders on a number of legal and regulatory issues.
Experience working with Human Resources and management in advising on the entire employee cycle through termination/separation – in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations including pay equity, pay practices, meal and rest periods, overtime, and other wage and hour compliance.
Experience working on labor relations and organization issues, understanding NLRA obligations, campaigns and unfair labor practices.
Experience in, or working understanding of, OFCCP compliance and federal contractor regulations.
Experience handling and/or managing employment litigation/arbitration, LWDA/DLSE/EEOC/CRD charges, PAGA, class actions, and wage and hour disputes
Ability to proactively approach all aspects of litigation, including discovery, motion practice, witness preparation, settlement negotiations, and trial and appellate strategies.
Experience educating business partners on new laws and general labor and employment compliance.
Experience developing and implementing policies concerning labor and employment-related matters.
Resourcefulness, strong intellectual curiosity, and ability to quickly learn complex systems and their legal framework.
Exceptional legal acumen, critical thinking, and communication skills, with proven experience in relationship building and partnering in team-oriented setting.
Experience working with healthcare entities is a plus.
Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience: 10+ years of labor & employment counseling and/or employment litigation experience working at a law firm, government, and/or in-house setting, or in healthcare setting. Healthcare or government experience, experience with wage and hour is strongly preferred.
Minimum Education: Juris Doctorate
